From Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to The Apollo

Just got back from Cleveland where I performed at the VIP party for the new Women Who Rock exhibit at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum. It was a blast!
Then the next night at the benefit concert for the Hall of Fame was just so much fun from introducing Cyndi Lauper to joining her on stage along with Mavis Staples and Darlene Love. Just us girls Having Fun! Mavis was adorable…I’ve never met her before. She has such a strong, big voice for such a little lady. I loved her!
But I have to say the icing on the cake was
running into Chuck Jackson who I’ve known for 40 years but hadn’t seen in 30, his wife Helen who I knew since childhood at the airport. It was great reconnecting with Chuck who will always be dear to me because of our days at the Brooklyn Fox.
Now I am getting ready to return to my beginnings – where it all started for me when I was 11 years old. The Apollo Theater Thursday night. The Apollo is where I got my first applause from an audience (other than my family) and made me want to sing even more. It made me what I am today.

I want to wish everybody a Merry Christmas and hope your dreams come true.  I’m so happy that my fans loved my new Christmas material.  That’s the best gift I can ask for.   This really is going to be my best Christmas ever…we are going to do our last Christmas show this Saturday at Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut.  It’s been such a thrill for me to see so many of you at the shows giving me so much love!   To everyone…HAPPY NEW YEAR.

I just had a great rehearsal yesterday…first time I sang the songs off my new Christmas CD with my band and let me tell you..it was bad (you know..good bad).

I got excited listening to the band and thinking about getting back over to the UK to see all my friends and fans. The first big trip I ever took in my life with the Ronettes was to England and I always remember landing at Heathrow Airport and being met by the fans and press. That’s why the UK is so near and dear to my heart. So many wonderful memories. John, touring with the Stones, and being in a different country for the first time ever. And I can’t forget eating all those wimpy burgers!

I love my new Christmas CD- it’s so cool, it looks just like a Christmas card. Everything I love about Christmas is on it like Frosty, Santa, a sleigh, presents and even me, Mrs. Claus. I just love the package. It brings back lots of memories and when I open it up and see the picture of my sister and me, I remember what Chrismas was like when I was a little girl. I loved when mom and dad would go out to get the tree, seeing dad hauling the tree in-I knew it was the start of Christmas. I would decorate it with everything I could get my hands on. I can still hear mom saying “stop putting so much on the tree”. I also loved wrapping the presents. I would go out and get all my aunts and uncles presents and wrap them. I remember aunt Helen, I got her a container of Sherman’s Barbeque and wrapped it up. I also got my aunt Grace a pack of cigarettes that I would wrap up for her. Well, I didn’t actually get the cigarettes – my mom would have to buy them but I still got to pick them out and wrap them. 75 days and counting!!

It’s Christmas in August and my birthday…what more can I ask for! I Finished up recording the coolest Christmas tunes for the upcoming holiday season (can’t get here fast enough for me) and I even used real strings-it was magical!

When I figured nothing can top that – I find out that they’re releasing a Best of Apple Records which includes my ‘Trysome Buysome’ for the 1st time on CD and download. Makes me think of that time at Abbey Road Studios when I walked in and saw George Harrison there. I asked him “George try what, buy what? What’s this song about?” … He looked at me and said “Ronnie, I wrote the song and I don’t know what it’s about”. Unbelievable!

I also got a fat free slice of cherry pie that I am looking forward to enjoying after I take a break from pouring over my script for ‘Beyond the Beehive’ that I will be performing Sept. 11 at the Infinity Music Hall-life is sweet!

From the gap to the studio

I love going to the mall…just got back with the perfect pocketbook to go with my new summer shoes along with very cool straight leg jeans. The pocketbook is by far the best because there’s only one zipper to deal with and no digging in different compartments.

Another thing I’m excited about is getting back into the studio this month to record some xmas tunes and some of my favorite Doo Wop tunes. One of those songs being by Billy Stewart that I especially loved as a teenager!…..what’s old is new again and it’s great.

Taken from the Pittsburgh Gazette

’There was the expected degree of tension in the air as Ronnie Spector, rock ‘n’ roll royalty that she is, and her entourage were slowly led into the on-deck circle behind the Benedum stage late Saturday afternoon.”

“With hair primped and makeup and sequined black outfits on, they huddled near the production table in the dark, going over last-minute instructions. On the other side of the curtain The Kingsmen had just ventured on. As soon as they hit the opening notes, backstage, eyes widened, mouths opened, booties shook and ponytails went flying among Ms. Spector’s backup singers, breaking some of the tension.”

“It is, after all, nearly impossible to stay still to “Louie Louie.”

“Persevering through false starts because of a technical glitch that had the sound technicians in near freak-out mode, Ms. Spector had to be a sport, before caressing her two golden hits, “Baby, I Love You” and “Be My Baby,” as part of a four-song set.”

“You were really focused,” a handler said to her when she came off stage.”

“I was, wasn’t I?” she said with a laugh, easing down the hallway”

When I was in Pittsburgh this past Saturday night taping the PBS Special, it was wild running into people I hadn’t seen in years, reminding me of the 60’s when we were all together backstage at the Fox Theater or the Apollo having a ball.  I saw Dee Dee Sharp, Linda from the Angels, Lou Christie, Shirley of the Shirelles….it brought back great memories just seeing all the people I knew.  I had a blast….and I even saw the Planatones while I was having dinner but no Kenny.

My favorite TV shows….

CSI Miami-I love the water, the colors, the clubs…the whole scene.
I also love when Horatio takes off his shades and squints his eyes..very cool.
I just started watching American Idol, It’s been on for soooo long I figured I should see what it’s all about. I call it the “good, the bad and the ugly.”
I’ve been watching Joy Behar alot, love her laugh, her personality and her guests.
I’ve been checking in to watch Sober House…I like the straight talk from Dr. Drew, and the colorful characters that are trying to get there act together.
I don’t see anything wrong with ‘The View’. I especially like Whoopi Goldberg on it and the different ages of the women on it. They all give their own opinions.
And I like almost every show on the I.D. Channel and been watching a lot on the Biography Channel.
Last but not least, the show I have been watching for the longest period of time is…drum roll please, Law & Order (Criminal Intent).

What was I thinking?
I loved Ellie Greenwich-she was the only one who stayed in touch with me for 40 something years.
Don’t ask me how I forgot to say her name at the Hall of Fame induction. I mentioned everyone else but Ellie, including thanking Ellen Degeneres!
Don’t know how I did that. I was thinking so much about her before I performed, singing one her great songs, which she wrote for me-and I felt so bad after when I thanked Ellen Degeneres. I wanted to disappear.
I was honored to be part of her induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Before I performed all I was talking about was what a wonderful songwriter and person Ellie was. She would call to tell me how happy she was when good things happened for me. That was ellie.
I was so fortunate to have Ellie in my life, personally and professionally.
I miss you Ellie
